不管是美高、美本还是美研申请，文书都是必备的申请材料之一。对于不同类型和/或不同制度的申请，所需的文书也有所不同。举例来说，申请美高时， SAO系统中的所有学校都会收到同样的学生和家长主要文书(Student Essays& Parent Statement)，也就是说，不需要对不同的学校进行个性化修改；而 Gateway系统中的个别学校是单独规定文书要求。
美本申请常用系统最新的文书题目和要求也各不相同：Common App是从七道Essay Prompts中选择一道作答，字数要求250~650字；Coalition App是五选一，建议长度为500~650字；而UC系统则是Personal insight questions八选四，每篇文书限制在350字以内。
此外，美本转学的文书要求与First Year申请也有差异，例如UC系统在七选三的基础上增加了一道必答题。
相比美本 First Year申请文书，美本转学文书题目及美研申请之 Personal Statement写作一般更有针对性和目的性，更注重体现学术性和专业性，要求学生说明自己的长期和短期目标、职业兴趣、未来规划等。

#1 做真实的自己
在写文书时，有些同学和家长会觉得泛善可陈，难以找到可写的文书素材，最后不得不过度包装甚至弄虚作假。但事实上，通过深入的发掘和恰当的描述，寻常小事中也能凸显出不同寻常的闪光点。对于阅人无数、有着“火眼金睛”的招生官，过于刻意的包装反而可能适得其反。

#2 用第一句话吸引眼球
招生官需要阅读上千篇文章，如何让你的文书令人印象深刻？答案是给读者想象的空间，激起读者阅读的欲望，不要重复申请中已有的内容。
Make your first sentence compelling. The reader has to slog through about one thousand other essays; how are you going to make yours memorable? Capture the reader’s imagination. Make the reader want to read your essay. Think what else is in your application and know that you do not have to repeat it.
#3 边距不要采用两端对齐
两端对齐的边距适用于学术期刊、报纸和简历等，而不是大学写作中。采用“左对齐”时每个单词间的空格宽度一致，阅读时更悦目。
Don’t use justified margins. Justified margins are for scholarly journals, newspapers, resumes, not college essays. Use the “Align Left” on margin choice; it’s in the #1 position for a reason.
#4 展示，而非讲述
例如，你想写一篇关于你祖母和她教给你的知识的文章。你应该描述你的祖母，你和她的关系，以及让你获得这些知识的对话，而不是直接陈述这些知识。
Show, not tell. For example, you want to write your essay about your grandmother and the lessons she has taught you. Rather than explicitly stating the lessons, you should describe your grandmother, your relationship with her, and the conversations you have shared that led you to those lessons.
#5 专注于一个故事 & 多使用对话
从你的生活中选择一个故事进行详述，不要含糊不清地把多个故事混杂到一篇文书中。多使用对话，让故事中的人物更加生动立体。
Focus on one story. Describing one story in detail is always better than describing many stories without much detail.
Include dialogue. In these personal stories, it’s important to include both external and internal dialogue. Dialogue helps to bring life to the characters in your story.
#6 认真研究学校和具体课程
写小文书时，记得查看课程网站并提及特定课程和教授，以表明你有认真研究所申请的项目，并展现你对该项目浓厚的兴趣。
Research the school and the specific programs. For supplemental essays, remember to look at the program website and mention specific classes and professors. This shows you have done your research and are genuinely interested in the specific program you’re applying to
